Licor 43, first created in 1946 by Diego, Angel, and Josefina Zamora and Josefina's husband Emilio Restoy, was inspired by the ancient Liqvor Mirabilis, a fragrant, golden elixir infused with local fruits and herbs during the 3rd century in Carthago Nova. Despite its production and consumption being banned by the Romans, the Carthaginians continued making the elixir in secret and it ultimately influenced the recipe for Licor 43. The modern-day liqueur, which contains 43 different ingredients including citrus and fruit juices, is a closely guarded secret of the Zamora family, who also incorporate aromatic herbs, spices, and vanilla into their recipe.
